This year during Lent - I keep coming back to these two verses...
“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
and break every yoke?
Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—
when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own kin?“
Isaiah 58: 6-7
It's simple - God doesn't want my coffee, or my desserts, or my social media time, or any other "fast" that I might could come up with during this 40 Days of Lent. He wants me to
feed the hungry,
provide shelter to those without,
give a pair of jeans to those that need it,
fight for the poor...
So...while I'll give up my desserts this year because I need the physical reminder to be about His work and I could spare to avoid the cakes and cookies for a while anyway -
I'll also be fighting and praying and serving and giving because that is what He has chosen and that is what pleases His heart.
Oh Father - break our hearts for those that are bound up by injustice, open our eyes to the hungry and homeless, open up our wallets and our budgets and our closets and our pantries and our calendars and our time to the poor,
simply because that's what you have asked of us....
